Is there a way to determine how many experience points my heroes have (not the main hero)? Or how many is needed before they level up?

No. They do gain 5x experience if they're a lower level than you though, so they'll catch up quickly if that's your concern.

One thing to remember is that heroes gain XP when they're in your party and you accept a quest reward. If you're in a town and you're going to accept a quest reward from an NCP, drop your level 20 heroes from your party and add your non-level 20 heroes before accepting the reward.
